Happy Monday Everyone!

Time to switch things up.  Today is now Style day!

Years ago, my sister-in-law, made a conscious decision to alter her décor style.  Previously she had liked very modern, high-gloss furniture (it was the 80’s), useless sculptures and porcelain collectibles.  Then one day, she announced that she no longer liked that style and was changing her décor to a more classical, sophisticated look.  So, she got rid of her collections and useless sculptures and started buying leather sofas and iron and glass.  The only problem was that she still had the high gloss pieces, which she tried to work into this new classical look.  But, sorry Senka, it didn’t work very well.   And she continued to try to change things that bugged her, like the flooring one year.  Then the paint, but only in some areas.  Like all band-aid solutions, they end up being only temporary and not working well.  And I feel she didn’t make good use of her money.

So the point of telling you this, is that it’s important to establish a style at the on-set of any decorating.  Now I know I’ve said before  “Always start with your colour palette first”.    And this still holds true if you already have a sense of your style.  Because ultimately your style will dictate the parameters of your colour palette.  For example:

Classic Style = Muted colours of greys, blues, beiges

Modern = bold vibrant, colours, mainly primary tones

Eclectic Vintage (Shabby Chic or Bohemian) = Complementary tones that are muted with yellows and greys. i.e. worn out looking colours.

Casual (country or modern) = Pastel shades

Traditional = Mid to darker shades

There are many more decorating styles that can be defined, but I’m only concerned with the ones that appeal to our North American sensibilities.  And there are many versions of the main styles as well.

Like in my case. I prefer a modern eclectic feel, but I’m in a very Arts and Crafts house with very dark traditional woodwork.  A challenge for sure.

So what’s your decor style?

Stay tuned to Style Mondays, where I’ll dissect each style and help you define or redefine your style.

Cheers!
