You’re shopping for a sofa.

You find one that is upholstered in a fabric that is processed and manufactured in China, with wood made from clear-cut forests and will take 6 -8 weeks or longer  to get in the colour you want.

You find another one that has upholstery and its frame made from FSC certified fabric and wood, will take anywhere from a couple of days to a few weeks and is from a Canadian company.

Oh, and they are comparable in price.

Which one would you buy?

Always a leader in their industry, the GUS* Design Group, has just added new FSC-certified upholstery, dining and accents to its already extensive eco-friendly collection.

“Gus* consistently produces beautiful modern designs that attract a loyal following”, said Bobby Berk, owner of Gus* Studio showrooms in Manhattan and Miami.  “By producing those designs with FSC-Certified wood, Gus* is making a long-term commitment to the environment that customers recognize and appreciate.”

What I love about this company is that they are constantly innovating, and evolving with the social consciousness.  The GUS* Modern Furniture collection is designed in Canada under the direction of David Podsiadlo and is sold at over 150 furniture retailers across North America.  And that includes one of my faves STYLEGARAGE.  See the post I did in January here ….

New to the collection is the Richmond Bi-Sectional, with a relaxed frame and a configurable chaise.  You can switch around the position to suite your space. Now that’s thinking!

Also debuting is the Stanley Series, a line of indoor dining and accent tables constructed with solid, FSC-certified Ash and stainless steel.   This line includes the Stanley Dining Table and Bench, Coffee Table and End Table.  I love the “slatted” wood top made of individual solid Ash boards.

If you happen to be attending the High Point Furniture Market in North Carolina this week, check out these new designs.  They’re at IHFC D508, 5th floor Design Center Wing.

Or you could just hop down to STYLEGARAGE.

Cheers!

Shop Watch – STYLEGARAGE

About 8 years ago, I was designing my first commercial space (a small investment firm), and it was then that I discovered  STYLEGARAGE.  At that point in time, I felt I had discovered the coolest shop in the city. And now going on it’s 10th year, I still feel the same way.

STYLEGARAGE has helped define our modern lifestyle in this city by designing and manufacturing furniture and accessories that are high quality, timeless and most importantly, affordable.  This is simply amazing, considering you can get custom-made pieces.  All of the furniture at STYLEGARAGE (except Gus*) is manufactured right in Toronto.  Talk about buying local!

I’m also very impressed with their corporate mandate to give back to the community with their hugely popular “KEEP ON GIVING” Event.  For the month of January, when you bring in 3 non-perishable food items, you get 15% off all Gus* Modern furniture and accessories;  as advertised in the Toronto Star on Saturdays.

The Gus* brand, which is widely distributed and sold in other stores and was originated at STYLEGARAGE now has it’s own store right beside STYLEGARAGE– The Gus* Studio.   Here you can order pieces in whatever colours you need and instead of waiting 6 to 8 weeks like most furniture manufacturers, you may only wait 2 days if it’s in stock!  This is unheard of in the design industry.  I know, you’re thinking it can’t get any better.  But wait.

The Gus* line is now manufactured using FSC certified wood only!  To read more on the importance of using FSC lumber click here.

Check out the great furniture and some of my favourite pieces.

STYLEGARAGE is located in the West Queen West neighbourhood at 938 Queen  St. on the northwest corner of Shaw and Queen.  You can’t miss it.  Sign up for their newsletter and find out when their great sales are before the general public.

Say hi to Rogie when you’re there.

Cheers!
