Small is Better

Geoffrey Fulton’s first Small is Smart mobile home – 1964

Cottage season is here folks!!

Everyone will be leaving work early this Friday in an attempt to bypass the traffic.  Some smart people will take Friday off and go up on Thursday.  I can feel it already.  There’s a particular excitement mixed with dread energy in the air.  Excitement to finally breathe fresh air and be in the wilderness and a dread of what repairs need to be done.

We had a family cottage.  And all I can remember is my parents working; repairing, replanting; repainting…. “It was relaxing in a different way”, they would say.

I now rely on my friends to invite me up to their cottages for a weekend of R & R.  And I’m grateful because I never have to repair anything!

And this past weekend I was up at Eileen and Chris’s cottage.  It was a girl’s weekend and did we relax and eat well.  Their cottage is nice and roomy; kitchen, large dining, living, screened in porch and big back deck, 4 bedrooms and sleeps 10.  And we (except Eileen) started to talk about the type of cottage we would like if we had one.

We all agreed that a small multi-functional box would do us just fine.  You know the idea: small structures that could be added onto if we needed to expand.  This isn’t a new concept of course, but it totally makes sense for a summer cottage.  So I did some investigating to see what was out there.  I found these prefab, multifunctional, self-sustainable, moveable little homes from all over the world.
