I know that my last Eye Spy post really wasn’t at the start of the week, so I’ve decided to give RED the attention it deserves!
Red is truly an amazing colour. Beside the fact that it’s my favourite, as I’ve already mentioned, and I’m wearing my favourite red pants today, theorists will tell you that it is a very diverse colour because it has a great wealth of modulations. It can go from cold to warm, dull to clear, and light to dark, without destroying its character of redness.
The most common, a red-orange is dense and opaque, as if filled with inner warmth. It has an intense fiery strength that is symbolically comparable to the earth’s core. A red-orange light promotes vegetable and organic growth. It is associated with the planet Mars; the burning world of war and demons. It is worn as a sign of material occupation by warriors and has been the badge of revolutions.
This type of red is also tricky when decorating, because if you pair it with say a bright green, it becomes “an impudent, rash intruder, loud and common” (Thank you Johannes Itten). But if you have it beside a green-blue, then red becomes a blazing fire! Truly, the best way to handle red, if you want to use a truer red colour is to ground it with a grey tone.
However you decide to use it remember, red demands attention, so be sure to give it the space it needs. Go out today and buy a bunch of red Gerberas and see what happens when you put it in different locations. Take a picture and let me know what you discover. Cheers! diana@flohaus.com
