Diana – Where does the name “Liloo” come from?
Sapna – The name selection was an easy pick and was always in my heart from the beginning. The store is named after my mother; she is my mentor, my best friend and my teacher. She encompasses to me beauty, integrity and grace. She is also my deepest connection to India. She has always encouraged me to embrace my Indian roots. When I decided to open Liloo, I created a vehicle to connect my Indian heritage and my Canadian lifestyle. My mom was immediately on board for the journey. She allowed me to immortalize her and honored me with the permission to use her name. And so I did. Without you mom, there would be no Liloo. And so our journey together continues…
Liloo opened a little over 4 years ago in the emerging area of Leslieville on Queen St. East. I remember dropping in when Sapna Alim just opened and thought back then that this store was going to be special. And although 4 years isn’t long, it is a testament to her product quality and mix that she has survived the retail downturn of last year. Not just surviving, Liloo is thriving with the most amazing Indian inspired home products, pillows, linens, napkins, accessories, gifts and more.
“Modern Infused, Indian Inspired” because Sapna searches out artisans who have maintained traditional techniques, but inspires them to produce in colours and fabrics that are modern. For example, she carries linens made by the ancient craft of hand and foot loomwork, using only natural dyes called Jamdani. This is so rare that Jamdani is done in only one village in India.
And Sapna carries the most beautifully embroidered pillows made in Madhubani with Maharaja motifs. The quality is truly stunning. You would expect these pieces to be astronomical in price but you’ll be surprised at how affordable they really are.
She also carries her very own brand of body care products which are all natural. Really Nice!
In addition to the beautiful products, you can also register for your wedding, rent linens for your open house and have her make up your party favours as well.
Liloo, is located at 734 Queen St. East, just East of Broadview, north side.
I’m going down today to get my teacher gifts. See you there!
