Companies spend millions in research, to find the right colours for their products in order to achieve recognition and leadership in the marketplace.
Then why don’t we spend more time thinking about the right colours to paint our homes when selling?
Selling your home is a big decision and you want to get the most money possible. Right? (Rhetorical, Sorry!)
We take our time picking a real estate agent, mortgage lender and lawyer. And although some agents are now offering staging services, most of the time they only address clutter on a real minimal level.
It takes expertise (the agent) to identify whom your market is, how, where and when to sell. And then to give you the edge you need, you should consider an experienced designer/stager, who will look at all aspects of your home and give you advice with the single goal of maximizing your homes appearance to get the most money possible.
Yah, yah, I know you know this already, but what about the colour? Well, studies (and my personal experience) have shown that certain colours will appeal to certain audiences.
For example, if you are leaving your first time home and are looking to attract a young couple, which will eventually have a family, the most inviting colour you should use is yellow. Remember in Feng Shui it represents the centre of the home, family and the earth. Read more here.
But if you are selling to an urban more modern clientele, young or youthful empty-nester couple, double income, no kids then pick very neutral colours, such as whites. Read more here.
And lastly, if you are in a well-established neighbourhood with more affluence, then staging is a must. Here you will use neutrals but with some colour to offset the architecture and your furniture; greens, blues, greys. Read more here.
Have you noticed that I haven’t recommended vibrant colours at all? This is because you want to give a subtle hint of style, always with the intention of making your potential purchaser comfortable so that they can picture themselves living there. Then once they are in, they can change the colour to whatever they want.
